The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) is a public university in Edmond, Oklahoma known for its broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs, strong commitment to student success, and active research and community engagement. History
Founded on December 24, 1890 as the Territorial Normal School, UCO is one of the oldest higher-education institutions in Oklahoma. It evolved through several name changes—Central State Normal School, Central State College, Central State University—before adopting its current name in 1991. Throughout its history, UCO expanded from a teacher-training school into a comprehensive regional university offering diverse degrees and fostering academic growth.
