History

Founded in 1905 as the Fifth District Normal School, the institution began primarily as a teacher-training school. Over the decades it expanded its academic mission and changed names—becoming Northwest Missouri State College in 1949 and earning university status in 1972. Since then, it has grown into a comprehensive public university dedicated to student success and community impact.
