Goucher College, Maryland

Goucher College is a nationally recognised liberal arts institution that prepares students for global citizenship and impactful careers.

Overview

Goucher College is a private, coeducational liberal arts college located in Towson, Maryland, just north of Baltimore. Known for its rigorous, globally focused liberal arts and sciences curriculum, Goucher combines small class sizes and close faculty mentorship with a strong emphasis on international experience and community engagement. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees across a range of disciplines while fostering critical thinking, creativity, and ethical leadership among its students.

History

Founded in 1885 as the Woman’s College of Baltimore City by a group of Methodists led by Rev. John Franklin Goucher, the college was renamed in honor of its founders in 1910. Originally a women’s institution, Goucher relocated to its current 287-acre wooded campus in Towson in the mid-20th century and became fully coeducational in 1986. Over its long history, Goucher has cultivated a reputation for innovation in liberal arts education and global learning.

Unique Features

  • Global learning requirement: Goucher is one of the few U.S. colleges that requires all undergraduates to complete a study abroad experience, with 100+ programs in more than 30 countries, embedding global perspectives throughout its curriculum.
  • Student-centred environment: With a low student-to-faculty ratio and small class sizes, the college emphasises close mentorship, personalised academic support, and collaboration.
  • Liberal arts with career relevance: Academic programmes build critical thinking and real-world readiness, supported by internships, community-based learning in Baltimore, and career development services.
  • Vibrant student life: Goucher participates in NCAA Division III athletics (Landmark Conference) and hosts a range of student organisations, cultural events, and service opportunities that enrich campus engagement.
  • Strategic location: Its proximity to downtown Baltimore—and easy access to Washington, D.C., and New York—expands internship, cultural and professional opportunities for students.

Location

The college’s campus resides in Towson, Maryland, a suburban community north of Baltimore that blends residential tranquillity with access to city amenities, cultural attractions, and internship and career networking opportunities. Baltimore’s rich arts, music, and professional scenes serve as an extension of the classroom and community for Goucher students.
